**Oral**
- Went about as expected, with scenario-based questions evaluating each topic of the ACS.
- More questions than I expected regarding what makes you current as a private pilot (not just what makes you current for IFR).
- No major problems with my flight plan/nav log, though for Victor airway routes, he wants to see a fix between VORs or the changeover point identified on the nav log.
- Definitely do a handwritten, hand calculated nav log – don’t just print out the Foreflight nav log
- DPE drilled deep on why a particular approach was not available as an alternate at my selected alternate airport when there was no explanation of “why” in the Alternate Minima list. Answer was not immediately obvious from the plate, but it was because the weather observation equipment at the airport wasn’t sufficient to support an ILS.
- Include (and plan) for an alternate, even if weather doesn’t require it
- While going through my standard Wx briefing in ForeFlight, DPE asked “where would you look to see if NOTAMS exist for the approach.” When I said “I can see them here (in the Wx brief), but would check the approach plates,” DPE slammed his hand on the table and yelled “No! You’re getting a standard weather briefing!”
**Flight**
- Based on how he talked about the potential options for approaches, seems like his current preference is to do the partial panel circle into KLEE or X04, depending on weather and traffic. The autopilot coupled and precision approaches he prefers to do at KORL.
- We departed KORL and went west. DPE vectored me, but did not have me intercept a course during flying other than during the approaches.
- Near the west practice area, we did unusual attitudes. BOTH were partial panel (without warning – DPE covered the PFD while my eyes were closed for the first one).
- We then stayed partial panel and flew the RNAV04, circle 13 into KLEE. DPE made initial contact with KLEE tower to request the self-vectored approach, but after we were on the approach, I was responsible for all radio comms. DPE was upset when I asked him if he would be providing missed approach instructions that were different from published (as Orlando Approach usually does for consecutive practice approaches) – he wants to simulate real world as much as possible (you shouldn’t know if you’re going missed…). He was also upset when I asked if I could temporarily remove the panel blocker to update the altimeter on the PFD (in case of a real world issue). “Why would you need that?! You’re flying the standbys!” We got extended on the circle due to traffic, but DPE considered the approach satisfactory for practical test purposes. DPE told me to go around about 100ft AGL.
- We then proceeded to CERMO for a hold. While maneuvering toward CERMO, DPE removed the panel blocker, so I did not have to do the hold partial panel. Be sure to faux call Approach the first time you cross the holding fix (when “entering” the hold, not when “established” in the hold) – I didn’t call until I was beginning my first full/correct lap in the pattern. The hold was somewhat nonstandard in that I had to extend the outbound one leg due to traffic, but DPE was satisfied I could do it.
- After the hold, DPE told me to call Orlando Approach to get practice approaches at KORL (student needs to know how to do this).
- We did the RNAV 7 auto-pilot coupled to LNAV minimums. We were at the MDA for a while. DPE never told me to go visual, so I went missed.
- We circled back around to the west to do the ILS 7.
- Though there were times during the flight portion that the DPE was unhelpfully scolding me for doing things that weren’t “wrong,” but simply different than he would do them, there were also a couple times when he was helpful (e.g., “what altitude did I assign you?” when I’d deviated a bit).
