# Recommendations - I would personally recommend looking into an instructor change for Jared. He did not make negative comments about his current instructor but I don't think they have good matching personalities - Jared needs review of the maneuver manual supplement and other resources. Different maneuvers / procedures should be assigned and tested before allowing him into the simulator or airplane - Jared struggles to track courses correctly, additional practice should be done with relatively strong crosswinds in tracking both GPS and VOR courses. The MFD should be disabled during this practice to ensure he is not flying solely based off of it - course tracking should be shown to a proficient level before attempting more complex procedures like holds - Please track the number of times and note it in his records how often he requests to leave during his sessions (I have heard he has done this with two different instructors). He did this twice during my session, once requesting to go out to his car # General Notes - discussed how he felt about progress in the course - stated that it was "going pretty ok" and I asked whether there was anything he felt he was struggling with or could use any additional assistance with - stated was struggling with orienting himself in relation to a VOR while attempting to enter into a ground based holding procedure, but was not struggling with holding patterns - I attempted to gather more information about how he felt about his training and if there was anything else that we could help with but he did not give me more information and often answered my questions very vaguely, neither positive ore negative # [Flight (link to foreflight mobile)](foreflightmobile://maps/search?q=APT@KORL+AD@TOLLZ2+NAV@VHF;28.542722;-81.335014;;;K7;T:ORL/290/15+NAV@VHF;28.542722;-81.335014;;;K7;T:ORL/290/24+HOLD@NAV@VHF;28.542722;-81.335014;;;K7;T:ORL/290/24%23296OR001.00T%23%23%23+NAV@WAYPOINT;28.634097;-81.5305;X04;K7;K7;:TBEAU+HOLD@NAV@WAYPOINT;28.634097;-81.5305;X04;K7;K7;:TBEAU%23140OL001.00T%23%23%23+6000ft) ## TOLLZ2 departure - loaded departure procedure properly - asked if we were going to MANSEQ (recommend reviewing what this is) - did not make any wind correction, flew heading aligned with head of course needle causing drifting left of course - noticed deviation and appeared to mainly fly utilizing MFD for navigation - when asked about this after the session stated that that is how he mainly tracks courses, which also helps to explain his additional challenges with tracking a VOR course when there is no line drawn on the MFD - flew course of 270 crossing TOLLZ instead of heading 270 (interesting given challenges with tracking courses) ## Intercepting and Tracking - instructed to intercept and track the 290 radial from the Orlando VORTAC - became confused and thought that we were trying to hold at the VORTAC, I clarified that I wanted him to track the radial - properly loaded course and utilized 45 degree intercept angle for a few seconds and then said "we probably have to go behind it" and set a 90 degree intercept angle - stated "Ryanne says that it doesn't matter about intercepting outbound so do I actually have to intercept?" (most likely conflating the outbound heading on a holding procedure with intercepting and tracking a course) ## Hold 1 - West of ORL VORTAC 290 R 24 DME - read back holding instructions correctly - drew holding pattern backwards, drew entry diagram backwards, became confused on proper entry, we paused and I helped him draw it out - was not sure what the proper angle was for a teardrop, told him it was 30 degrees - could not calculate heading for teardrop, gave some tips on how to do it with drawing to confirm correct heading - altitude deviations +/- 200 feet - incorrectly calculated inbound course of hold to be 070, asked how he got that and then stated that it would be 010 (also incorrect) - became confused and couldn't figure out what was wrong - turned outbound to 210 instead of 290 after timing for one minute inbound with no verification of crossing holding fix inbound - did not make any required reports or mention the 5Ts ## Hold 2 - TBAU 140 radial left hand turns - did not make wind corrections while proceeding to the holding fix leading to a full deflection - drew out the holding pattern and consistently took hands off the flight controls - did not suspend sequencing, asked "how would I fly the hold?" - crossed holding fix approximately 1.5 miles off course - twisted course knob after suspending sequencing while turning back and forth - did not do 5Ts, did not report crossing holding fix ![[Pasted image 20260202170158.png]]
