Overall Judson did quite well, from what I can tell he should be on track to be ready for the phase 5 progress check within a few lessons to improve his landings and approaches.
# Notes / Recommendations
- Practice with ATC Communications:
- use an app like LiveATC and pick and airplane to follow in the pattern and practice responding as if you were them
- this is a skill that requires dedicated practice to develop and it is much more cost effective to practice it on the ground compared to in the airplane
- make sure that practice always doing flows whenever you make a configuration change to the airplane, you missed some things such as not bringing mixture to rich when initiating a climb
- good job with trimming out the airplane
- make sure to do all turns in instrument conditions at a standard rate (you can use approx. 15 degrees of bank during turns)
- make sure that you always read out loud checklist items that you are doing
# General Notes
- good job with passenger / PIC briefing and checklist usage before takeoff
- make sure that you disengage starter immediately when the engine starts turning on its own
- even if this causes a false start, it is better to do that then continue with the starter engaged
- good job briefing taxi instructions
- good job being cautions of runway intersections and actually taking a second to check each direction before crossing
## Steep Turns
- remember that you can do these starting in any direction, you don't have to turn into the wind
- a little bit too much rudder in the direction of the turn (skidding) during left turn and not quite enough rudder during right turn
- airspeed and headings good
## Slow Flight (Landing Configuration)
- always bug your entry heading for quick reference
- got slightly slow (-2/-3 knots)
- otherwise good job
- remember that if it is required there is nothing wrong with going to full power for a climb (especially when it is hot outside and performance is degraded)
## Power On Stall
- make sure to bug entry heading
- descended during entry into maneuver (remember to slowly increase pitch to aid in slowing down without reducing altitude)
- high pitch attitude after adding power (remember that we can only intentionally go to 30 degrees nose up pitch)
- bring the pitch up a little bit lower and continue to slowly pull back on the elevator (you will require a greater deflection on the controls as airspeed decreases because less airflow over controls means they will be less effective)
## Power Off Stall
- good job
## BAI
- remember that all turns while using the foggles should be done at 15 degrees
- remember to always highlight declaring an emergency
- otherwise good job
## Engine Failure
- a little bit high on airspeed
- stated could make it to X04
- 3,000 ft and airport 5.7 miles away
- realized would not make it (good thinking) -> changed to orlando north which was within gliding distance
## Landing
- overall good job
- make sure that you don't start descending before deciding to initiate the approach on a straight in
- make sure that you roundout at the appropriate altitude (continue to bring the airplane down until you are at a roundout altitude, don't slowly bring it up)
