# Thoughts
Miguel had a great improvement in almost all of the maneuvers since the previous time that we flew together. He has clearly reviewed the SOPs and kept the airplane under positive control for all maneuvers.
He talked through his thought process for the maneuvers and I did not see any issues with what he was saying.
He struggled significantly returning back to the airport when the tower gave him instructions that he was not familiar with (entering the downwind from north of the airport).
I have not spent enough time with him to make a conclusive determination, but from my general impression I have concerns that he struggles with critical thinking and the ability to deal with new situations in which he is not familiar.
Expanding on this, on the departure he did quite well. he stated that leaving from runway 25 he would go straight to colonial and follow it out to the practice area. He had good control of the airplane throughout the departure (although struggling with radio communications). From my perspective, it felt like something he was proficient in doing well and appeared to have done that maneuver multiple times.
However, when requested to do *anything* outside of what he appears to have a rote memorization level of, he seemed to immediately become confused. Combining that with his apparent lack of confidence (I attempted to prod about this in a kind way including asking if there was anything we could do to make him more comfortable / support him although he stated he feels good), he seems to start doing unpredictable things.
When facing his confusion, he seems to become impulsive and pick a course of action randomly. When the tower instructed us to enter the downwind from the north, he turned to the south. I asked him why he was turning south and he couldn't really give me an explanation.
I believe that it is important for Miguel to train specifically in dealing with a variety of non-standard situations that pilots can encounter, and I would recommend that periodic evaluation of his abilities to deal with new situations is utilized to make sure that he improves.

# Notes
- when responding on the radio do not read back your callsign first
# Power Off Stall
- great job but only brought it to imminent stall
- don't forget to turn off ESP in 174TH
## Power On Stall
- did not bring to full stall first attempt
- had him attempt again to go to a full stall
- slight coordination issue but overall good
## Slow Flight (Landing Config)
- during climb started deviating from heading
- always bug heading during maneuvers and also pick reference point
- maximum $-2$ on airspeed
- recovery good
## Steep Turns
- altitude $\pm 50$ feet
- need more right rudder in right turn
- airspeed $\pm 5$ knots
## Turns Around a Point
![[Pasted image 20250411101746.png]]
- altitude consistent
- airspeed $\pm 15$ knots
## Returning to Airport
- loaded direct to the airport but then flew southeast
- descended below his set altitude of 1,400 feet
- called tower
- Executive Ground Skyhawk 174TH is northwest of the airport inbound, information november, 10 miles away from the airport N174TH
- tower instructed him to fly northeast and enter the delta from the north
- he froze for a second, I ended up responding to the radio call, and he started turning to the south
- I told him to fly northeast bound and the plan would be for him to enter the delta from the north
- when we were northwest of the airport he stated we were north of the airport and started turning towards the airport
- I asked if we were north of the airport and he stated that we were because we were "northeast bound"
- tower then instructed us to fly two more miles and then turn to join the midfield right downwind for runway 25
- he did not understand this and I directed him through the pattern entry step by step
- joined the downwind about 2 miles out and flew westbound
