Trapped lee waves form when stability decreases and wind velocity rapidly increases above mountain top level. Wave energy is trapped in the stable layer, and propagates horizontally far downwind of the mountain as secondary, tertiary, etc waves. The greatest amplitude is found 3,000-6,000ft above mountain top level. Higher wind velocity and lower stability will result in greater waves lengths. ![[trapped lee waves.jpg]]
