![[GFH traffic pattern.png]] **ALWAYS** remain vigilant for other traffic in the traffic pattern. Defer to local procedures as applicable, but in general: - The IP (initial point) for traffic pattern entry is located midfield on the downwind leg - Approach the IP at a 45° angle to the downwind leg. This is standard, so other traffic will look for you here, you can see other traffic in the pattern, and it allows for an easy escape if there is conflicting traffic on the downwind - Set desired approach speed, and overfly IP at approximately 1000ft AGL - Turn to join the downwind leg; correct for wind drift as necessary to maintain a parallel track to the runway, approximately 1/2 mile from the runway - Use spoilers/dive brakes as needed to fly abeam the intended touchdown area at approximately 600ft AGL on downwind; adjust this altitude as necessary based on the glider's performance and current conditions (higher with strong headwind or strong sink anticipated on final) - Begin the base leg prior to the intended landing area appearing 45° behind the pilot's shoulder; adjust this position as necessary based on the glider's performance and current conditions (turn sooner with strong headwind or strong sink anticipated on final) - Continue scanning for traffic, and turn to the final approach to align the glider with the runway centerline - Adjust spoilers/dive brakes as needed to maintain a [[Stabilized Approach]] to the selected aiming point
