is performed when the glider has reached the desired altitude, or any time the safety of the tow is in question. ![[GFH tow release.png]] ### Execution - As the glider reaches the desired altitude, clear the area, **especially** to the right. - Pull the release knob fully out to engage the towhook release mechanism. This should be accomplished under normal towline tension, as some release mechanisms require tension to release properly. - As the towline releases, there should be an audible pop, a sensation of deceleration, and the glider pilot should observe the towline falling free from the glider. - After confirming a successful release, the glider should perform a 90° right clearing turn, while continuing to observe the towplane. - After confirming glider release, the towplane will perform a 90° left turn to ensure maximum separation from the glider. ### Common Errors - Failure to clear area prior to release - Failure to maintain normal towline tension - Failure to confirm successful towline release - Failure to perform 90° right turn after release - Losing sight of towplane after release ### Soft Release Some instructors advocate for a "soft release".
